What we hold, and how to change it
This page describes what Seata Scholar actually does with information. It was last updated on 10 October 2026.
Profiles of scholars
A profile is built from sources that are already public: a scholar’s name, institution, research topics and papers from OpenAlex; missing details from Crossref and Semantic Scholar; a position title from the scholar’s public ORCID record; and advisor and student links from university thesis records, Wikidata and the Academic Family Tree. Each profile says where its data comes from.
We do not hold photographs, private contact details or anything that is not in those public sources, unless the scholar adds it to their own profile.
Advisor guesses made from co-authorship are labelled as unconfirmed and are kept out of the lineage until one of the two people confirms them.
If a profile is about you
- Correct it. Claim the profile to remove papers that are not yours, change your institution and position, and decide what appears first.
- Hide it. Once claimed, you can hide the whole profile at any time. It disappears from the site and from search.
- Without claiming. Use “Report an error” on the profile, or write to support@seata.ai, and we will correct or hide it. This includes your name appearing as someone’s advisor or student.
If you sign in
Signing in is by Google or by a code sent to your email address. We keep that email address and a record of your sign-in sessions. Sign-in is handled by Supabase, which stores this on our behalf.
If you verify with ORCID, we receive your ORCID iD and name from ORCID and nothing else. If you ask another scholar to vouch for you, they are shown your sign-in email address so they can recognise you.
We keep a record of the changes you make to your profile, the claims you submit and the evidence you give for them, so that a claim can be reviewed and reversed if it was wrong.
We send email only in answer to something you did or to ask you to decide something: the outcome of a claim, a request to vouch for someone, or a notice that another scholar has listed you. We do not send newsletters or marketing email. Email is delivered through Resend.
Cookies and tracking
The site sets the cookies needed to keep you signed in and, briefly, one used during ORCID verification. It does not use advertising or third-party analytics cookies.
